Earlier this summer, we took a trip up to Oregon wine country. While we were excited to do some wine tasting, naturally, we were also pumped to check out a brand new boutique hotel in the Willamette Valley: The Atticus Hotel. Located in downtown McMinnville, we were within walking distance to many of the area’s best restaurants and our central location made it easy to venture to nearby wineries. Needless to say, it was the perfect home base for our Oregon wine tasting trip. Location aside, The Atticus is also just a lovely place to stay. It blends contemporary design with thoughtful details, comfortable rooms and a local mentality that fits right in.
McMinnville, Oregon
The Atticus is located in the small town of McMinnville, where a charming maple tree-lined main street is lined with historic brick buildings housing tasting rooms, restaurants and funky shops. Despite its small size, there are 20 tasting rooms downtown alone, not to mention a few of the best restaurants in Oregon wine country. I’m still dreaming about the cocktails and food at Thistle just a couple of blocks from The Atticus!
The Atticus Hotel
The Atticus is a 36-room boutique-style hotel that opened in April 2018. It stands out with its contemporary exterior, painted white and dark grey, but it still somehow fits in thanks to its historic-looking facade.
The Atticus is all about providing a luxury experience that feels more authentic than the standard hotel. It not only impresses with its chic design and amenities, but The Atticus also embodies an independent spirit that makes for a truly unique stay. There’s work from local artisans, Oregon-made products and curated details that show its ties to the local community. In fact, each room is a bit unique to reflect that creative vibe.

The Design
The Atticus’ design is both classy and inviting. When you step under the black and white striped awning through the front door, you’ll find the chic lobby filled with jewel-toned velvet sofas, leather accent chairs and dark wood coffee tables. Dark grey-blue walls and trim add to the moody ambiance, which is offset by the natural light pouring in through the large windows. Brass lighting fixtures hang from high ceiling, while local art and live plants add to lobby’s inviting vibe.
That aesthetic and color palate is carried out throughout the hotel, whether you’re in the hidden drawing room (accessible through a concealed door off the lobby) or in one of guest rooms. It’s the type of place that one could easily hunker down in and stay a while.

The Details
After we checked in at the front desk (which doubles as an espresso bar, I might add), we were given our large, tasseled key and a complimentary glass of bubbly as we headed to our room.
In the elevator, I immediately noticed the floor mat read “Friday.” Yes, they change out the mat to align with the day of the week! It’s just one of the many curated details at The Atticus, like the bowl of local hazelnuts and walnuts in our room set beside a selection of books hand-selected by a local.
There’s also cozy, in-room Pendleton robes and local coffee and tea. One of my favorite features was the temperature controlled wine fridge in our room. How convenient!
The Room
As I mentioned, no two rooms at The Atticus are the same. From studio rooms to balcony suites to a luxury two-bedroom penthouse, there are plenty of options. There’s also a grown-up version of a bunkhouse with, you guessed it, bunk beds for 4 people.
Our room was one of the 12 uniquely designed suites, so luckily we had plenty of space to spread out (and set up the Pack n’ Play!). It had a spacious bathroom with a shower and freestanding tub and a living room area separate from the bedroom. Large, barn-like sliding doors separated the minimalist bedroom from the living area, which had a couch and fireplace.
After we put our baby down, that space was key for us to be able to hang out in. One night, we ordered burgers to go from the attached restaurant downstairs (Bless Your Heart Burgers), then lounged in front of the fire and watched a movie. Thank goodness for large rooms when traveling with a baby!

Though we weren’t able to make use of the complimentary bikes or play a board game in the drawing room, we made the most of our time at The Atticus Hotel. It’s a great addition to McMinnville and a wonderful place to stay while visiting the Willamette Valley. We hope to be back one day!
